I thought it best to send out an early idea if anyone has upcoming graduation gifts this spring. For anyone who knows me, they know I love to give books asMehr presents, and I was happy to learn that today’s little book is still available on Amazon. But being a diehard Dr. Seuss fan, it’s hard for me to recommend a replacement book of the traditional “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” for graduation gifts, but Sandra Boynton’s little book, “Yah, You!” is also an excellent choice.
You may be more familiar with Ms. Boynton’s work as a greeting card designer. Her delightful characters have adorned more than 500 million during her greeting card years of… Mehr

I just finished A Prayer For Owen Meany by John Irving. I know its been posted previously by others but it was so good I wanted to give my opinion too. The only other book I’ve read by Irving was World According to Garp many many years ago and loved it.
Irving is an incredible writer and Owen Meany is definitely on my top favorites.
Oddly the character I was most fond of was Dan the stepfather. He was the glue that held the boy’s lives together.
I will put Cider House on my TBR.

The Secret History by Donna Tartt

A few months back, I reviewed Tartt's Goldfinch here and asked the group if it's worthwhile to read this book (The Secret History). I found that there are indeed polarizingMehr opinions about this author's work. I read it, and here's what I think.

It's hard not to commend the author's skill in weaving a creative tale involving a clique of ancient Greek students in a fictional college in Vermont, bound together by the shared experience of plotting and covering up the murder of one of their own. A Greek tragedy in an academic scale and setting, this novel brings to the fore each of the main characters' fatal flaw. Some might find the book to be high-brow, pretentious and dark (not to mention overly long). My bottom line is, it is a damn good story. I was blown away by the murder's whydunit (instead of the whodunit), as the rationale and psychological impact thereof, slowly unfolded.

It's also Tartt's debut novel, written while she was in college, which made it more impressive.

What do you think?

I have very nearly finished the book Thomasina by Paul Gallico, and I just can't wait to discuss it with everyone. This is a serious recommendation for those of you who haven't read it yet. It is a minorMehr classic, and along with The Snow Goose are two of Gallico's best known works.

I have seen the Disney film version from the sixties, but I hadn't read the novel until now. I hope many of you reply, or are encouraged to read the book.
